History – On a plot of land of 47 acres (19 ha) and bought by General Growth Properties in 1966, SouthPark Mall was developed by General Growth Properties at a total cost of $12 million. History: SouthPark was first opened for business on February 12, 1970, with Belk, Ivey’s, and Sears serving as its anchor retailers. At the time that SouthPark first opened its doors, the region that is now home to the amusement park was on the outskirts of Charlotte.
