He already had the opportunity to be a head coach in the NBA with the New Jersey Nets, and from everything that I have read, he didn’t really enjoy it.

If he had never held a head coaching position in the NBA before and wanted to give it a try before he retired, then the likelihood of him leaving might increase.
However, he already has been a head coach in the NBA.
It should come as no surprise that Calipari’s actual strength is in scouting and cultivating talent in his players.

The National Basketball Association does not provide possibilities of that nature. In addition, he has not yet reached the summit of collegiate coaching, which is the achievement of winning the national championship. It’s hard to see him ever leaving Kentucky until he reaches that particular objective.

Now, with a team that boasts five players who are anticipated to be selected in the first round of the 2012 NBA Draft, Kentucky is in an excellent position to achieve just that next season.
I believe that John Calipari’s chances of leaving Kentucky for the NBA are at their highest if the Wildcats are successful in bringing home a title in the following season.

After the draft, he will have won the elusive title, he will still have eight or nine terrific years of coaching ahead of him, and Kentucky will be relatively depleted of its roster. Despite this, I believe that Coach Calipari will spend the rest of his career in the Bluegrass coaching Kentucky basketball.

During a phone interview with Eric Lindsey of Cat Scratches, he stated the following: “If I finish the contract and continue to coach, it’s because I’m really having fun and I’m really having great enjoyment out of what I’m doing; the rewards I get out of draft night, of seeing guys like Darius Miller do what he did at the conference tournament, to seeing guys like Josh (Harrellson) and DeAndre (Liggins) improve.” In conclusion, he stated, “as long as I’m still receiving a lot of pleasure from activities of that nature, I might see myself completing this contract.” The most important thing for him at this stage in his career is to be able to say that he is enjoying teaching, since this is the one thing that truly matters to him.

The National Basketball Association is unable to provide him with the same opportunities for rewards and success that he had at Kentucky. In the end, it is possible that Calipari may not see out the remainder of the term of his contract, but it is nearly clear that he will depart from his position as Kentucky’s head coach.
