When was Woodfield built?
Woodfield Mall is responsible for this. During the 1970s and 1980s, a significant number of families and companies moved out of metropolitan areas in pursuit of the more spacious and less congested lifestyle that can be found in the suburbs. In the meantime, the retail titans of Chicago were doing everything they could to maintain their customers.
Woodfield Mall was conceived of by Robert Wood, chairman of Sears, and Marshall Field, founder of Marshall Field & Company, and it first opened its doors in 1971. (hence the name Woodfield). Businesses such as Motorola were attracted to the neighborhood as a result of the mall, and Sears ultimately decided to vacate its location in the Loop entirely and move its headquarters to a neighboring suburb.
Woodfield served as a catalyst for the formation of fond childhood memories, a haven for adolescents, and a shopper’s paradise. The enormous mall had everything that someone could want, and then some. It was finally possible to put an end to the stressful routine of rushing around from store to store during Chicago’s severe winters.

What is the main shopping street in Chicago?
© Paul/Flickr © Paul/Flickr Although Michigan Avenue is widely recognized as the premier shopping district in Chicago, it is important to note that this is not the only area in the city that may provide excellent opportunities for retail therapy. A day spent shopping may be had at any number of fantastic locations around the city.
Here are various alternatives to conventional shopping in Chicago, ranging from vintage to designer goods. Armitage Avenue | © Benita Gingerella Armitage Avenue and the adjacent Halsted Street have emerged as two of the city’s most popular destinations for independently owned boutiques and other hip stores in recent years.
Both streets are located in the thriving community of Lincoln Park. These two streets are now home to a large number of businesses, including the environmentally conscious and fair trade supportive Green Goddess Boutique as well as the chic upmarket secondhand shop Second Time Around.
State Street | © Paul/Flickr Although there is a surge in the number of people shopping on State Street during the Christmas season due to the fact that it has many of the same stores as Michigan Avenue, the street is typically less busy at other times of the year. The Macy’s store on State Street and Block 37 are two of the most popular destinations in this neighborhood.
State Street is not only at a fantastic position within the Loop, but it is also quite simple to get by either the train or the bus, which makes it an excellent shopping destination for both tourists and locals of Chicago. Belmont Avenue | © John Picken/Flickr A number of boutiques, resale shops, and thrift stores may be found in the immediate vicinity of the CTA Belmont station.
- The Belmont Army is a store that a lot of people like to go to while they are shopping in this region.
- This shop spread across five floors sells everything from shoes to antique items to military uniforms and more.
- As you go east on Belmont, you will come across an increasing number of secondhand and independent stores, each of which will sell one-of-a-kind and peculiar products.

The majority may be found in the central part of Andersonville, along Clark Street and the minor streets that branch off of it.
One of the most well-known places to go shopping in the neighborhood is the Andersonville Galleria, which is comprised of many levels that are devoted to the work of regionally based independent artists who sell their paintings, apparel, and jewelry. Retail establishments located near North Avenue | Benita Gingerella The stores on North Avenue, much like those on Michigan Avenue and State Street, include the same vendors but with a somewhat smaller number of customers.
Because of the convenient location of the stores near the North and Clybourn Red Line stop, customers may get there quickly and conveniently via public transit. It will come as good news to motorists to learn that a number of the businesses located along North Avenue provide free parking.
Wicker Park | © Ryan/Flickr The Wicker Park area is well renowned for its alternative and hipster atmosphere, and the shopping scene there is not an exception to this. The primary retail district is located along Milwaukee and Damen Avenues, although you may find stores that cater to a wide range of requirements and price points all around the neighborhood.
Myopic Books, Una Mae’s, and Eskell are some of the most well-known businesses in the area.
