On Tuesday, the transition to the new moniker was completed. But that’s not all that’s about to change at the outlet mall in Northeast Philadelphia that’s been there for 25 years and has 1.8 million square feet of retail space. The shopping center’s façade as well as its inside will be modernized as part of a multi-phase redevelopment project that was recently announced by Simon Property Group.

The outside will be updated with new mall entrances, landscaping, and signage as part of the project. On the interior, new skylights, new lighting, and new flooring are going to be built, and the toilets are going to get a facelift as well. WIFI service and lounge spaces equipped with charging stations are both going to be made available at Philadelphia Mills.

In a statement, City of Philadelphia Deputy Mayor Alan Greenberger said, “Philadelphia Mills is a vital part of the city’s retail heritage and we look forward to working with the Mills as this wonderful asset is restored and repositioned for a bright future.” The Philadelphia Mills shopping center is home to a number of outlet stores, the most notable of which are Neiman Marcus Last Call, Saks Fifth Avenue OFF 5TH, the Polo Ralph Lauren Factory Store, the Nike Factory Store, and the region’s largest Forever 21.

During the rebuilding time, the shopping complex will include at least a dozen new retail and food options, including the very first Express Factory Outlet store in the Philadelphia area, according to Simon, who is in charge of the project. “Our investment to reinvent Philadelphia Mills will provide our customers and the City of Philadelphia with a family-friendly shopping, dining, and entertainment destination unlike any other in the region,” John Ahle, the General Manager of Philadelphia Mills, said in a statement.

“This will make Philadelphia Mills unlike any other shopping, dining, and entertainment destination in the region.” It is anticipated that the outside work, which has already begun, will be finished in the fall of 2014.
