The collegiate football team that represents Western Kentucky University is known as the Hilltoppers, and they play under the name Western Kentucky Hilltoppers. The squad competes at the level of NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision and represents the institution as a member of Conference USA in the Eastern division.
In addition, the team is a member of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The squad from 2002 won the national championship for the FCS. The program has won 13 conference titles (one from the SIAA, nine from the OVC, one from the Gateway, and two from Conference USA) and four bowl games at the FBS level.
Tyson Helton is the head football coach for the Bowling Green Hilltoppers, and the club plays all of their home games at the Houchens Industries–L.T. Smith Stadium in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

The Murray State Racers and the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers compete against one another in an annual American college football game known as “The Battle for the Red Belt.” Murray State University and Western Kentucky University are both located in the state of Kentucky.
The competition began as an internal competition within the Ohio Valley Conference, but the Hilltoppers have since moved up to the Football Bowl Subdivision, first to the Sun Belt Conference and most recently to Conference USA. The competition is still active, however, and continues to be a rivalry between the two schools.
Although it is no longer played on an annual basis, the competition between the two teams has persisted in the form of a trophy game.
